How To Handle Anxiety In Children

In today’s hectic lifestyle, anxiety is a very common issue among us and not many of us are even aware of it! Unfortunately, anxiety does exist among our children as well whom we often think is stress-free and cheerful. Sometimes, parents indirectly cause it to happen in their children.

To handle anxiety in children, parents should take some time off to speak to them and get to know their daily activities. It can be done over meals or during leisure time as a simple conversation. Sometimes, your children might request to speak to you about this too. This helps parents to pick up on unusual behaviors and know them better emotionally. Ensure that you really listen to them when they speak as this not only help you in solving their problems but also comforting them indirectly as you show that you really care for them. By keeping an eye on them, you might notice that different children express anxiety in different ways like talking non-stop, drawing or over doing an activity to the extend that they cannot take it but they still continue.

While conversing, encourage them to share more and give your full support on their decisions but warn them on the consequences should they make a wrong one. Don’t be afraid to be honest with them as making mistakes as humans are very common as nobody is perfect but be sure to prove that you don’t set such expectations. Be sure to correct them if they are wrong and try to admit if you are in the wrong. It’s not necessary to have a serious conversation but you can keep it comfortable by having them speaking to you on your lap just like when they were young or in your arms. In fact, such comfort makes the child felt secure and loved even when they are overwhelmed by anxiety and by this they will get the confidence and strength to overcome their anxiety.

Besides talking, spend more time with them doing things they like. It can be simple activities like a leisurely stroll at the park/mall, engaging in their favorite hobbies and games as this would give both you and your children comfort and distractions for awhile. Exercising can help too as it helps to boost one’s mood and rejuvenates the body.  Ensure that they are having sufficient nutrients in their meals and not sleep deprived as these can affect their mood too.

By all means, it’s important to keep your family in harmony as it’s the place where your children find refuge. Try to seek for your children’s opinions as forcing your own ideas and expectations on them wouldn’t take you anywhere. Everyone has their own cup of tea, thus, it’s best to respect and be supportive to make them feel important in the family.
