Do you have problems getting your children to read books? Or do the kids prefer outdoor activities rather than reading? If so, your children could possibly have entered into the reluctant readers’ category.
Don’t fret! There are several ways for you to get your young ones to discovering the joy of reading. It is normal to have children who dislike reading even if you come from a family of avid readers. An interesting thing is that even if your children do not touch on any reading materials it does not mean they are not reading! Information in the form of words exists everywhere. Guides on household equipments, road signs and product labels are all considered as they provide important information to the reader.
Try to observe your children while they are reading. Some may not like to read alone and some have language difficulties which make reading a struggle. Thus, the best way is to read along with them as you can swiftly counter any difficulties in understanding that they might face. Select books that can interest young readers and are of educational value. Comics are a definite no while books with colored pictures that describe things will be a better choice. Try to ensure group readings as sharing with others will also strengthen their understanding and language skills.
Bring them out to bookstores and note what interest them. Let them be free to choose books of their interest. Should they be interested in pets, doing art and craft or magic tricks, introduce books that teach them step-by-step instructions for them to enjoy their hobbies. You will never expect what you might discover! Books with silly drawings and huge words are the best for children to develop their skills and imaginations.
When you bring them out on an outdoor trip, try to get them to write out their account of the trip as this can help improve their writing and memory skills. It can also help to get their imagination running. Maps and tour guides are also ideal materials to teach your young ones how to use these materials to get to your destination. Should they show on interest in star-gazing, you can introduce them to books on stars and cosmic constellations!
Instilling a good reading habit in your children is not tough after all. It must not be forced as it takes time to develop. Try to have reading materials available around the house so they can pick up and read conveniently. Bedtime stories are also a form of fun reading. It doesn’t matter how lightweight the materials are, as once they show an interest in reading, it will upgrade their reading materials themselves. The habit itself is the hardest but once you get the ball rolling, everything will come easily after that!
