How To Raise Responsible Kids?

Every parent would love to watch their children grow up to be responsible individuals. Responsible behavior should be instilled in your children as early as possible. However, children these days are becoming more and more pampered till the extent that they do not possess simple living skills as all these are done by their maids or parents instead.

Helping around the house is a very popular way for children to learn new skills and responsibilities. It doesn’t have to be heavy duty chores but simple chores like cleaning up their own room or cleaning up their pets will suffice. Create job jar where they can randomly pick a chore in the jar to do when they are free. Reward them after a task done to encourage them to do more work. Do not push them too hard in the beginning but let them pick up slowly and be initiative on their own.

Money is also very important in our current society and children must be taught how to manage their money responsibly and not rely on parents to keep giving them money. Restrict the pocket money you give them to a certain amount and should they finish spending it before the next period (month) comes, there will not be any extra for them. This is essential as children who grow up without learning how to control their spending normally end up in a bad financial position. Educate them on the importance of money and get them to make their own decisions on what should they spend first with a limited amount of money.

To encourage children to be responsible, parents have to set a good role model for them to follow. Never finger point or shift the responsibility to others else your children will follow suit. Punish or reward them for their actions as they must learn to be responsible for what they have done. Should it be a wrong doing, then a punishment shall be fair and vice versa.

Guide your children on the way and correct their mistakes upon notice. They are still young and they need help from us who have experience. Seek help or opinion from friends and child development specialists for better suggestions. To have your children take on their responsibility isn’t an overnight issue but a long term deal. Fret not as your children would thank you for your efforts in the future for bringing them up as responsible adults.
