Connecting with your toddlers has to be started since birth. It’s important to connect with them as being parents, you are the closest people to them who provide to their needs and care for them. By doing so, you are able to keep your children under control and not let them fall for the many temptations of the world in the future. So, here are some ideas to connect with your toddlers.
Because they are still young, they might experience feelings that are too much for them to handle and are difficult for them to express or explain. Help them deal with their frustration and emotional feelings by teaching them words or gestures that can be used when they get those feelings. If the problem cannot be solves still, try to distract or divert their attention to something else. While handling such situations, always remember to stay calm and not lose your temper or your child might feel even worse.
You can prepare your toddler for upsetting situations like separation. Sometimes, you have to be apart from your children for example due to work or school and by preparing them for this, they will not be uneasy when the time comes. Allow them to bring along their favorite object from home like their dolls or blanket so that it would let them feel more secure by having something they are familiar with in an unfamiliar place.
Let your toddler be independent and make mistakes by creating a low-risk environment for them to explore as this will help them to develop new skills. Give more attention to them when they are talking to you. If possible try to drop everything you’re doing and listen to them while noticing their emotions behind what they are saying. While communicating with them, get down on your knees or squat to have eye contact with them as this will ensure them that they have your gain your attention and let them finish their sentence before interrupting them.
At times you can encourage them by using their thinking skills in solving problems. It can be when they are playing or helping with house chores such as preparing a meal or cleaning their room or pet house’s. This is to help them to take up their responsibility and solve problems they encountered while learning from their mistakes. This indirectly relates to letting your toddler make simple decisions or encourages them to explore and experiment new things which leads them in becoming more confident and brave.
In any events, ensure you’re always honest to them as this will help you to earn their trust and respect. Toddlers are gentle and naïve young ones who still need sufficient care and guidance where parents are the key in creating their personalities.
